Phnom Penh: Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol says that the new traffic system that they are busy preparing will be an effective program in Cambodia to strengthen the enforcement of the road traffic law and in reducing traffic accidents across the kingdom. The program contains valuable features such as driver's license, identity card and vehicle identification card. It will also identify fake driver’s license. He says that they are working closely with the relevant ministries to prepare the implementation of this new driver’s demerit system.

This program will enable traffic police to automatically deduct points for driving offences. Drivers will be issued with an initial 12 points, with driving offences leading to points being deducted. If a driver runs out of points, their licence will expire and they’ll need to re-sit their driving exam within six months, before they are issued with a new licence and another 12 points. Last month, MPWT said that they would start training traffic police officers in August and will conduct a dry run on the new system next month.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has also announced that they will hold five live shows to allow the general public to ask questions through Facebook. The first live show will be held on Monday, 30 August, allowing people and stakeholders to ask questions on Facebook, as well as provide opportunities for them to share information to the society. The MPWT live show will be conducted under the theme, "Road Infrastructure Achievements from the end of 2018 to the present and ongoing plans until 2023".
